They are a challenge for biogas plant operators in two respects. On the one hand, farmyard manure containing litter is difficult to handle due to its structure and can sometimes be insufficiently fermentable. Secondly, the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus they contain can lead not only to disruptions in the biogas process, but in particular to high nutrient loads in the fermentation residues. This restricts the use of farm manure as a substrate in many places, although biogas plants in particular have an important role to play here as a &#8220;nutrient hub&#8221;.
