As part of a three-year research project, which was launched in mid-2020, solutions are to be developed for the efficient use of biowaste from urban sources and agricultural processes. The project called CAFIPLA, which is funded by the European Union (EU), involves a consortium of 13 partners with different areas of expertise. BIOPRACT is one of them and is contributing its recognized expertise in the field of enzyme technology.

To date, the immense potential that arises as biowaste in urban areas and in agriculture has only been used to a very limited extent. To date, the bioeconomy has mainly focused on processing sugar and starch-based raw materials. This means tying up valuable agricultural land for the production of raw materials, dependence on fluctuating yields and limited planning certainty when calculating costs.

The CAFIPLA research project has set itself the goal of developing solutions with which organic waste generated in an urban or rural context can be utilized. On the one hand, acids (CAP) are to be obtained from the biomass, from which microbial protein and polyhydroxyalkanoates, which are used to produce bio-based plastics and C8 bio-oil, can be extracted. On the other hand, the fiber components (FRP) can be used, for example, as a raw material for the production of packaging or insulation material.

To achieve this, the biomass, which has very different compositions, must first be pre-treated for further processing. This is done mechanically and using enzymatic processes, BIOPRACT’s “flagship discipline”. This is where our specialists can contribute their expertise and know-how from many years of research and development in the enzymatic pre-treatment of highly heterogeneous biomass. BIOPRACT is working closely with the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna as part of the European research project.

The CAFIPLA project is pursuing a radically new approach to bioeconomic applications. They should be pragmatic, sustainable, resource-saving, environmentally friendly, value-adding and economical at the same time. An ambitious goal to which we are happy to make our contribution. We will keep you up to date on further developments here.
